アルフレッド・セイヤー・マハン Alfred Thayer Mahan
1840年9月27日-1914年12月1日
アメリカ海軍の軍人・歴史家。最終階級は少将。
マハンは海洋戦略の古典的理論家であり、その著書は世界各国語で翻訳されている。
彼の著作はヴィルヘルム2世や秋山真之も愛読した。
大艦巨砲主義を助長したとして批判の矢面に立たされる事もある。
彼に因んでいくつかの艦船がマハン（ex:USS Mahan）と命名された。
19世紀フランスの兵学者ジョミニの影響を強く受けている。
彼の戦略は、根拠地と交通線を重視していた。
彼の戦略を忠実に継承しているのは、ソ連海軍だといわれる。
彼の論理は、類似点とともに、相違点をも分析することに重きが置かれている。
経歴
1840年9月27日: ニューヨーク州ウェストポイントで、陸軍士官学校の教授であったデニス・ハート・マハンとメアリー・ヘレナ・マハン夫妻の間に生まれる。
１２歳でメリーランド州、セント・ジェームズ神学校送られる。
親の希望に反してコロンビア大学で2年間学んだ。
1859年: 海軍兵学校卒業。
1861年: 少尉に任官。南北戦争ではフリゲートのコングレス、外輪船のポカホンタス、ジェームズ・アジャーに乗艦した。
1865年: 少佐。
1872年: 中佐。イロコイ号の副長として幕末・明治維新の日本を実見した。
1885年: 論文「メキシコ湾と内海」が評価されたことから大佐に昇進して海軍大学校の初代教官を務め、海戦術の教育を担当した。
1886年: 海軍大学校、校長兼海軍史、海軍戦略教授。
1886年-1889年: 海軍大学校長。
1890年: 「海上権力史論」発表。
1892年-1893年: 海軍大学校長。
1893年: シカゴの艦長としてイギリスを訪問する。
1894年: オックスフォードとケンブリッジから名誉博士号を受け、ヴィクトリア女王、皇太子、首相、海軍協会などから招待を受ける。
1896年: 退役してからは、アメリカ歴史学会会長及びハーグ平和会議のアメリカ代表団顧問を務めた他は研究に専念しており、「ネルソン伝」、「米西戦争の教訓」、「フランス革命とナポレオン帝国におけるシーパワーの影響」、「海軍戦略」を発表した。
1899年: 第一回ハーグ平和会議アメリカ代表団顧問。
1902年: アメリカ歴史学会、会長。
1914年12月1日: ワシントンD.C.で心臓疾患で死去。
