帆走経巻一　Chapter 1

When we are devoting to pure sailing, we are reaching the state of Samadhi in Zen of Buddhism. I have thought that pure sailing is an endless road like Martial arts or Art road, and we can’t stop walking the road. Purely pass through the gate is not an only way to enlighten, and pure sitting is not Zen way. I have felt like this, to walk for seeking the road is the first way, to walk for seeking pleasure is the second way, to walk for seeking work is the third way, and to walk for seeking life is the highest way. I made clear the third way, and practiced the second way.

One day, I visited the priest of Zen for seeking the sailing road. “I beg the directions and secrets of sailing road.” The priest said, “Keep ready and safety, get wind, and slide.” I replied, “Such a thing everyone knows.” The priest said, “So you do, if you can do like I say, I’ll become your disciple.” I said, “The priest, keep ready and safety, get wind, and lets it slide.” “No, not so that, board and human isn’t apart, be wind, and slide.”

Sailing is the road, so it doesn’t over, and it isn’t completed. You will progress, but you will not complete in future. When you sail, you are in Samadhi, and there is nothing other than Samadhi. If you don't understand this, you will lose your way.

     我を忘れて、ただひたすらセーリングに没頭しているとき、我々は

  禅でいうところの三昧の境に達している。私は、セーリングが武道、

  芸道と同じく、歩まずにはおれない、はてしない道なのだと思うよう

  になった。門をくぐるばかりが道ではないし、坐わるばかりが禅では

  ない。

　   私はこのように直感した。すなわち、道を求めて道を行ずるのは

  第一の道、遊びを求めて道を行ずるのは第二の道、仕事を求めて

  道を行ずるのは第三の道、生活を求めて道を行ずるのが至上の道

  であると、そして私は第三の道をすっかり明らかにして、第二の

  道を行じた。

     ある時私は道を極めんとして、師を尋ねた。「師よセ−リングの

  心得と極意を承りたい」　 師は答えた。「安全と用意を心がけ、風を

  とら えて、ヒールを保ち、滑るべし」、私は不服で「そんな事は

  誰でも知っています」と言うと、師は言った。「それなら私の言うよ

  うに行じて ごらん、その通りにできたら、私はあなたの弟子になろう」　

  「大いなる師よ、よく風をつかまえて、ヒールを一定に保ち、艇を滑ら

  せればよいのですね」　「否、それでは、操る人と艇が一体になって

  いない。風をとらえるのはセールだ。それに滑らせてはいかん、滑る

  のだ」

   「すばらしきかな大徳」  私は礼をつくし別れた。

　  セ−リングは道だから、これで終わりということも、これでいい

   ということもない。上達はしても完成するところがない。セ−リング

   道を行じているときが三昧であり、それ以外に何か別なものを得よう

   としても何もありはしない。この辺が分らないといつまでも迷うばか　

りだ。セーリング道はただただセ−リングしつづけるところにある。

　実に道ははるかである。
