帆走経　巻五 Sailing is a Buddist practice

　 「セーリングとは何か」突然こんな質問を発したものだから、師は困ったようだ。大きな顔を大きな手で掴むようになでてから、破顔一笑、「只のセーリングじゃ、 セーリングの為にセーリングすることじゃ。人をつくる為でもなく、勝つ為でもなく。ましてや名聞利養のためでもない。何ものにも汚されぬセーリングじゃ」　 私が抱いていた疑問とは、 修行と悟りにかんするもので、仏行として のセーリングとはいかなるものか悩んだ末、師をたずねたというわけな のです。 私は更に細かにたずねた。 「仏行としてのセーリングとは」 　｢輪空よ、集合乃至解散がセーリングに他ならない。集合もセーリング、服装もセーリング、艤装もセーリング、中止もセーリング。それぞれが等しい価値を持つ行持（ぎょうじ）なのだ。 「師よ、海には何がありますか」 「輪空よ、何もありはしない」 「でも」と言いかけたが、師は続けた「その辺が分からなければ、 いつまでも迷うばかりだ。只々帆走を護持しなさい。護持する者をみ仏は守りたまう」 　私は大きく頷いて礼拝した。 　聖衣輪空 “What is sailing?”The master seemed troubled because I suddenly asked such a question. After grabbing face with his big hands, he laughed and said, “It's just sailing, sailing for the sake of sailing. It's not about making people. Not for the sake of winning. Moreover, it is not for the sake of fame or gain. Sailing is untainted by anything.” The questions I had were related to training and enlightenment, and after wondering what kind of Buddhist sailing was like, I turned to my teacher. I asked for more details. “What is sailing as a Buddhist practice?”“Rinku, gathering and disbanding is nothing but sailing. Gathering is also sailing.Clothing is sailing, rigging is sailing, cancellation is sailing. Each one is an act of equal value.”“Master, what is there in the sea?" “Rinku, there is nothing ." “But,” I started to say, but my master continued, “If you don’t understand that part, you ’ll just be confused forever. Just keep sailing. The Buddha will protect those who protect him.”I nodded and worshiped.
